I did my graduate work nights, though, so I was not surrounded by "the academy" in the same way as you are when you're covered in ivy.

Also I suspect that "the academy" may have been less politicized in the past.

Of course, when I was in school, they didn't yet have "women's studies" departments...

Just one example of my point above.

I don't think the schools I went to where as politicized or liberal as many of the more "elite" schools, but I do remember seeing examples of political correctness distorting the presentation of history for example a display of "Great Black Kings" that included Hannibal and Cleopatra. Actually I surprised it didn't say "Great African-American Kings" <g>
