I would recommend looking at the Scion xB if you want roominess and fuel economy. It is rated 30/36 mpg and has loads of room for four passengers. It's built on the Toyota Echo frame, and is more of a mini-mini-van. My daughter has had one for two years and loves it. She looked at the Vibe/Matrix and liked the Scion much better--more room and better vision.

While it has a small engine, it is peppy enough with the manual transmission. The automatic seems to be OK as well, from owner comments.

And, it's only $15K.
