An added irony to your unfortunately all-too-plausible contention -- a disproportionate number of "American" comedians from Mary Pickford (yes, a comedian), to Rich Little and Wayne & Shuster, to many of the key members of The Saturday Night Live Gang Back When It Was Funny and of The National Lampoon Back When It Was Funny, to SCTV, to Mike Myers, to Jim Carey, and on and on and on, were/are Canadian.
I contend this is so because we Canucks are insider/outsiders to American culture, able to seamlessly blend in save for the occasional give-away "oot", even if we've only to been exposed to the mythologized versions of American life we see on TV and in the movies.
But most importantly for a comic/comedian, we Canadians never have our vision of the US clouded by the blind affection that comes with patriotism (something which also describes the names you mention plus other greats like George Carlin).
Plus irony is a natural approach for Canadians. Rather than just comin' right out and sayin' sumthin' about sumthin' that's botherin' them, Canadians are more likely to drop gentle hints, polite ones at that, and express their resentments through sly verbal mocking. Except when their kid is playing in a minor hockey game. Or they're drunk. Or...
