I do believe the cult of celebrity (and inane ones at that, it's not as if people are idolizing scientists or school teachers) goes hand-in-hand with the fundamentalist extremist Christians (and other such religions). People wake up in the morning and find that they live in a nondescript vinyl box in suburbia, they find that their job consists of pushing around papers, they hear about another disaster in the world and they freak the heck out. Fundamentalism, inane celebrity worship, empty entertainment...it's a way to numb out the silliness of modern life. Now, if everyone could get interested in something worthwhile.... Just dreaming.
