Also I suspect that "the academy" may have been less politicized in the past. I'm not sure that they're as politicized now as some people seem to think they are. Certainly interest group studies, which didn't even exist in the curriculum when I was in school, are politicized. But except for some diva type professors, I'm not sure the academy has changed that much. Not sure it hasn't either, just suspecting a lot of demonization based on exaggeration of the low-hanging fruit. (I'm in Tucson visiting my dad so I'm just answering as many as I can of the messages addressed to me.)
