I don't give a flying flip about whether he is going to let you down or not. Nor anybody else. Won't matter one iota to me.

The job is what it is. Public relations. Presenting one point of view in the best light possible.

Whatever you think about journalist ethics, whatever you think about the objectivity of the press, irrelevant. That's not the job description.
