Rock, you seem to be ignoring that state governments will
be adding a "use" tax to electric vehicles to make up for
tax revenues lost due to declining fuel taxes. All electric
is only practical for short commuting because the recharge
time is so long. For that reason hybrids are more likely
to be endemic, and much more utilitarian for longer trips
and larger vehicles.
Once someone decides to drive multiple high current
generators via a small super efficient engine to provide
ample electricity for driving and simultaneous recharging of
the battery pack the technology will become commonplace.
I don't believe maximum efficiency hybrid technology has
been fully developed yet. I think in about 5-7 years the
technology will far exceed todays capability and efficiency.
