Bob,

I like turnaround stories like Cray. When they go up, it is usually several fold. Sometimes they turn into 5-10 baggers and sometimes they go bust. I've owned it since the very low 1's - high risk/high reward.

Yup. It is kind of like a LEAP.

Is Cray shipping (as far as current systems) anything other than Opteron based systems?

It seems that there are only 2 systems that seem to be mentioned in significant new sales:

XT3 - Originally Red Storm, which Cray has since sold to others, including recent sales in Japan, UK and Australia

XD1 - former Octigabay system, which is a smaller system with some FPGA (Xilinx)

I think both of these, especially XD1 will benefit significantly from the recent announcement about coprocessors connecting right onto HT, but it may open the door to more competition as well.

XT3 currently uses some custom IBM connectivity parts (which I seem to recall were a source of some problems earlier). I wonder if Cray is going to dump these for pure HT based connectivity, potentially with some custom logic like Horus.

Anyway, it seems that the recent win (not officially announced by Cray as far as I know) for near petaflop system will help on the road to profitability, and may give Cray some lead vs. other 2 rivals in DARPA competition.

I think winning DARPA alone could lead to 5 bagger from current levels.

Joe
