I agree with that, but I don't know what's wrong with indicating that the current user name is not the original. Something like:

Date joined: 2/2/2002
Last name change: 4//4/2004
Number of name changes: 3

As far as I'm concerned, it's not even about helping out the conspiracy theorists. There has been more than one occasion where it took me forever to realize that a "new" poster on a thread is someone who has been posting there for years.
