As you can probably tell by now, I am a fan of Freud. What is interesting for us on this thread is his interest in literature and his feeling that novelists were way ahead of psychoanalysts in understanding the human condition. He particularly cited Dostoyevski, Gogol, Ibsen and his favorite writer was L. Ryder Hubbard. Hubbard wrote two of my favorite books: "She"(I think this book was the inspiration for Raiders of the Lost Ark in its style as an adventure story) and "King Solomon's Mines". For feminists, "She" is a masterpiece and makes the Da Vinci Code look like a 6th grade reader. (Mary Magdelaine vs. She) Hubbard's writing style is very 19th Century and somewhat like Joseph Conrad but more lyrical.
