If you have already invested money in an exit ticket, the odds you will stay are less. And if they need to chuck you out forcibly, it's easier to take you to the airport, put you on that airline and watch you take off. Otherwise they have to get one of their neighboring countries to agree to take you at a land border, which is much trickier.

It also depends on the parrot, of course.
