not familiar with locating. proven is test wells that have produced gas or oil and from flow determine size of reserves.

locating maybe from various rock formations, tech machines past experience where they expect to find reserves...

I remember back in 70's oil industry thought millions of gallons of oil off georga's banks.. it proved to be a bust after several years of drilling. they found some oil but nothing at a flow to be productive.
