The way you feel about being American, I don't understand why you hang on to that passport. You feel ashamed and fellow Americans equally feel ashamed about your attitude close to being a full traitor. What I mean is, move or at least apply for a different citizenship! Canadian seems to fit you well and being Canadian you still can live and work in the US without any problems.

I have a Swedish passport and in spite of a lot of events during the years, much of which was caused by a socialistic style government totally opposed to my political orientation, I am still a proud Swede and would never want to hide that to anybody.

If I were to feel otherwise, I would promptly apply for a different citizenship.

Believe me, it is quite unhealthy to feel rotten about the roots and not doing something about it. The true source of a split personality, which can later develop to worse.
