Re: But some Latinos have expressed ambivalence about the boycott and marches, saying they could stir up anti-immigrant sentiment amid an incendiary atmosphere surrounding the issue.
They haven't seen nothing yet... The real danger for you all is a terrorist attack (think of an OKC-bombing-like event) occurring in the US with a trail of evidence leading to some Latino conspiracy; in other words, a Latino/Hispanic terrorist attack. It could be either a cointelpro provocation hatched by US intelligence (FBI, CIA,...) or a false-flag scheme by a foreign power. The result and objective of such a ploy would be that the US would find itself in the same shoes as Europe with regard to Muslim immigrants. It would be a Hispanic 9/11 of sorts.
Up to now, white Americans' misgivings about illegal immigration from Mexico mirror those of Europeans about Muslim immigration BEFORE 9/11, that is, Latino illegals are merely viewed as a SOCIOECONOMIC/CULTURAL threat, not as terrorists... Latino illegals are branded wetbacks, welfare spongers and unfair competitors who spoil the US labor market. It's pretty much the same grudges most Europeans held against their own immigrants from (North) Africa, Turkey,... before 9/11 and the Israelization of Europe put another, ominous spin on the issue: from mere welfare-scroungers-cum-petty-felons, nonwhite immigrants were recast as "al-qaeda sleepers and terrorists".
Of course, such a twist would be welcome as far as the US far-right is concerned because it would dramatically accelerate their anti-immigration agenda --it would successfully psych up US public opinion into condoning the harshest measures against Latinos, both legals and illegals. And it would neutralize pro-immigration liberals with the slander of "traitors who're too soft on terrorism"....
