The Great American Backlash?
[John J. Pitney, Jr 04/28 10:13 AM]

On a party-line vote yesterday, the California Senate passed a resolution endorsing "The Great American Boycott 2006." Organizers of the event hope millions of immigrants (legal and otherwise) will skip work and school on Monday to force Congress to liberalize immigration law. Marc Cooper, a contributing editor for The Nation, worries in the Los Angeles Times that the boycott could "alienate lawmakers and the public." There are already signs of backlash, including increased membership in the Minutemen. Strong public concern about immigration could mean a November boost for candidates favoring get-tough policies.
