I grew up on a cotton farm during the last guest worker (bracero) program. We had what amounted to a small apartment complex on the farm (6 units). Every spring my Dad and neighbors would go down to a large federal labor camp where the workers were camped out. There was a mix of single men and families. They picked out the workers they wanted in a process I never personally saw.

Our typical group would be an older couple who acted as foreman. His wife was typically in charge of the housing complex. My Dad tried to get the same couple each year but it wasn't always possible. Then there would be about 4 families complete with kids. We used to play with the kids all summer, it was kind of like a summer camp sometimes. Finally there was one room that had 4-6 single men. The families all seemed to come from Oaxaca region. My Dad said the families cut down on trouble that some neighbors had when they had mostly single men.

The men all chopped and picked cotton throughout the spring and summer. The women cooked and kept chickens. I used to hang out and eat fresh tortillas all the time. We played with the kids, but never let them into our house. It seems strange now, but just seemed normal at the time. At the end of summer, about the time we went back to school, they all left. Things would be a lot quieter until the next spring. It all ended by the time I went to high school and big machinery replaced the braceros.
