I doubt we'd be having this conversation.

Back in the mid-80's, my wife and I were bicycle riding in Maryland tobacco country on the Delmarva Penninsula. She picked up a hanger in the front wheel, went over the handlebars.

Got a separated shoulder and hit her head. Luckily, this was the first time out we were wearing helmets. I hate to think what would have happened to her if she hadn't had the helmet on.
