InterDigital and Moto ...

scratchmyback,

<< I haven't followed Interdigital too closely for some time, so please excuse me if this a stupid question... But what is Interdigital's and Motorola's relationship? >>

Tense. <ggg>

<< I think a few years ago Motorola didn't have any agreement with Interdigital at all, but is that still the case, or am I mixing some things in my head????????? >>

They still don't.

InterDigital went after Moto early on, but Moto challenged in Delaware court and in 1995 (I believe) the court declared InterDigital's TDMA patents invalid.

Shortly after a German court upheld the same patents and Siemens and Samsung licensed with InterDigital who they then went after Ericsson in US court and Ericsson finally settled with them. In 1999 Interdigital had its patents revalidated by the U.S. Patent Office and the Swedish and German Patent Offices have affirmed the validity of Interdigital's patents since the Motorola case.

The 2G patents expire before long so one can assume that InterDigital will be back on Moto's trail before long.

Best,

- Eric -
