A distinction:

At press time, 3Com was reporting that 932 ISPs were up and running with x2 technology, and Rockwell was reporting about 1,000 ISPs were using K56flex.

Judging by the torrent of K56Flex problems being discussed (and cussed) in the Ascend user's forum, the distinction is material. The benefit of controlling both ends of the connection are very apparent.

If the 'Flex consortium can't communicate using their own proprietary protocols, how will they ever make the ITU standard work? Answer: Badly. That's why they are in no hurry to get a standard, and will keep spreading FUD to delay it's adoption.
