I suppose in galactic terms, two items can be proximate to each other yet be quite a ways apart. It's all relative, I guess.

This is what dictionary.com has to say about proximity:

prox·im·i·ty Audio pronunciation of "proximity" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prk-sm-t)
n.

The state, quality, sense, or fact of being near or next; closeness: “Swift's major writings have a proximity and a relevance that is splendidly invigorating” (M.D. Aeschliman). See Usage Note at redundancy.

If something is "near or next" I don't see how adding the word "close" adds anything.
