Zarqawi's name first came up in this now-discredited story about him having his leg amputated at Saddam's Baghdad hospital. cnn.com

A year later the story was that Zarqawi had leapt from a speeding car and eluded US captors on foot.

So the initial story about the amputation which Cheney puhsed a lot, turned out to be BS. Plus no witnesses were ever found at the hospital to corroborate Zarqawi was ever there.

Zarqawi is now something of a cipher. Is he the real thing or a DOD-created boogey man? Apparently he does exist. Or maybe there are two Zarqawi's. Like there were two Oswalds.
