Iran & Israel

Jonah Goldberg
The Corner

There's one piece to the Iran debate that seems sorely missing. There are good arguments on both sides about whether America should strike Iran's nuclear program pre-emptively. But it seems to me there are really good arguments for why Israel should strike Iran. The Iranian regime has said again and again that Israel not only should be destroyed, but that it will be. It has said these things in the context of developing nuclear weapons. While we can debate, I suppose, whether America has an interest preventing the destruction of Israel, if you are an Israeli it seems to me the need for debate is fairly minimal. And yet, here in America there's very little conversation about what our response would be to an Israeli strike. There's also very little discussion about how an American decision to strike would be influenced by Israel's calculations. Obviously, such discussions are mined with all sorts of hot buttons, but it seems sort of silly to argue about all of this without making room for the reality that Israel's national security interests cannot tolerate the current Iranian regime's possession of nuclear weapons. Or am I missing something?
