No CDMA sell-off

MAY 01, 2006
TELSTRA says it is not possible for a company to take over its CDMA network when it moves over to a new 3G system.

US-based telco, CDMA Development Group, said it wanted to use Telstra's CDMA network, which Telstra planned to switch off in 2008 when it moves to a new $1 billion system.

The Asia-Pacific arm of CDMA Development Group approached Prime Minister John Howard to keep the CDMA network operating.

But Telstra spokesman Rod Bruem said the company's position was not negotiable.

"It's not possible to take over the network because the spectrum and 80 per cent of the infrastructure is being redeployed in the new improved 3G 850 network," Mr Bruem said.

He said the CDMA lobby was stepping up its efforts to promote the technology because Telstra's decision to abandon it meant the writing was on the wall in terms of its future.

"CDMA is on the way out and other carriers will follow Telstra's lead because we have the second biggest network in the world," he said.

He said early trials of Telstra's new network showed high speed data could be transmitted at distances of 80km from base stations - 20km more than it could currently transmit using CDMA technology.

"To stick with CDMA would consign rural Australia to an inferior technology that faces extinction," Mr Bruem said.

A working group has been set up to ensure the changeover from CDMA runs smoothly.
