Anthony,
I currently know of several ways to edit MPEG. First, on the low quality MPEG 1 side there are several companies that do this. Furure Tel has a $50 software editor that allows for IBP frame MPEG 1 editing.
FAST Multimedia, the company I work for introduced an MPEG-2 editor and the 1997 NAB show in April and just recently at IBC in Europe. The product is called blue. and you can find out more about it if you are interested at www.fastmultimedia.com.
For the most part you are correct, as far as I know there is no way to edit MPEG-2. ZRAN, CUBE, and LSI do not offer editable MPEG-2 solutions. FAST had to develop its own chipset to do this. Editable MPEG-2, which means I frame only MPEG-2, is a relatively small market compared to the enormous market out there for MPEG decoding (DVD Players, etc). It is FAST's hope that the major chip manufacturers take their sweet little time in developing editable MPEG hardware. It will provide us with a longer time to be the only player in the MPEG market.
I hope that helps, and no, FAST is not a public company.
