The Search for Methane in Earth's Mantle

Conclusion based on thermodynamic analysis by researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Lab:

The CHEETAH calculations indicated that methane production is most likely to occur at temperatures near 500°C when pressure is less than 7 gigapascals. These conditions correspond to depths between 100 and 200 kilometers.
