In the 1950s I was drinking coffee while hunting and trapping, but never went into a coffee house until the late 60s. Bad lighting, bad poetry, no coffee. I never went back.

I did run into a good troubadour at a coffee house in the late 70s. He made up songs on the fly. If a girl walked in the door and had a red dress, he'd make up a little song about it right then and there.

This guy was the equal of Arlo Guthrie, I think. He was political too, but I listened because I liked his style. I remember one song about Leonard Peltier, who was an Indian activist of the day.
