True, CAU at MacDonald Meadows, MT. I will throw in Montanore, MT (Noranda); Crown Butte, MT/WY (Battle Mtn Gold); Crown Jewel, WA (Crown Resources); Lynne, WI (Noranda); Grassy Mtn, OR (Newmont/Atlas?); Quartz Mtn, OR (Newmont?/Quartz Mtn Gold); Olinghouse, NV (Alta Gold); Windy Craggy, BC (I don't know the operator and believe someone knowledgeable about BC could name several more).

One of the worst stories I am aware of is about an unfortunate individual who discovered and proved up a trona (sodium carbonate) deposit in SW Wyoming in the early 60's next to the Green River. Just after that Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was created. He fought the permitting battle for 40+ years and the BLM never said no and never said yes because either had consequences for them. They came up with 40 years of hoops to jump through and court cases, all of which they lost. They pretty much ruined more than half of a person's life trying to thwart a mine and avoid a takings case.

Then there was a huge, low sulfur, coal deposit in Utah. An underground mine with a rather small surface footprint was proposed by the developer. The government responded by establishing the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, covering thousands of square miles. The mine was nixed.

Sorry for the prolonged rant. I guess the moral of the story is caveat emptor in any country.
