'Does a plane basically disintegrate when it hits the ground like that and leave only little pieces?'

I have a friend that was a photographer for the San Diego Union (major newspaper). He happened to be near North Park when a PSA jet crashed in 1978. He drove over and ran to the site - both to help and take some photos.

Many people saw the jet go down. There are photos of the plane on fire (it hit a small plane in mid-air). SEE:

When my friend got to the site, there was nothing but fire. He said he kept looking for the plane ... there were only pieces. It had just disintegrated.
