What I don't understand is why the automakers haven't increased the number of miles per gallon a LONG time ago
I think its called PHYSICS!! Gasoline supplies so much power, vs WEIGHT, power requirements and aerodynamics of vehicles. The only way to get fantastic gas mileage is to lower the weight, lower the speed, lower the power, improve the aerodynamics etc of the vehicle. Americans have PROVEN over and over THEY DONT WANT a tiny lightweight underpowered vehicle. This is why I have been so excited about Alternative fuels such as Ethanol, I thought perhaps we can have our cake and eat it too. here are some HINTS to get some more mileage out of the ole family sedan or SUV. Lower weight--keep the trunk clean, dont carry around clutter, even consider not carrying your spare tire IF you are staying local. Improve rolling--Keep tires well inflated, dont exceed the MAXIMUM rating on the tire but consider inflating say 30#'s or better. Keep vehicle tuned--Spark plugs, Spark plug wires (where applicable), even the O2 Sensor, CLEAN AIR FILTER. Use SYNTHETICS--synthetic oil, grease, even tranny fluid.
Doing all of above can increase your MPG up to 5mpg. JDN |
