Hagel is fine, but you're assuming the rightwing base would consider him. Also, Hagel's problem is that McCain is in the way, and then Guliani and then Romney, all fairly moderate conservatives. I think Hagel is the best of the GOP candidates, but does he have a chance?

Anyway, the real show is this November when every single congressman and half the senate are up for re-election. It's starting to look lioke a perfect storm to clean house, mainly of rightwing Republicans. ANyone who backed Bush or Delay in particular should be gone except in the reddest of districts.

A year from now Cheney should be gone, maybe Bush too (though Dems might be smarter to leave him in office and put him in a box), and we should have all new congressional leadership. What a relief that will be.
