It is trying to be scientifically accurate since billions of the world's population do not recognize christ or christianity. Therefore, BCE (before current era) is not something politically correct as some have charged, but accurate as far as an historical measurement of history that the entire world and all cultures can follow.

At least that is the objective reasoning.
