I think it's time to build myself another Dream Machine. Probably build a budget server that can also do some occasional gaming. The hardware should be well supported for Linux (Fedora or CentOS as the base OS), and also other OSes through VMWare Server to test with (Ubuntu, Windows, and various others). My last computer was a dual CPU and I would like to go that route again, only dual core this time. Here's the contents of my shopping list so far:

ASUS A8N-E Motherboard ATX S939 NFORCE4 Ultra DDR PCI-E16 PCI-E4 2PCI-E1 3PCI SATA RAID Sound GBLAN
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core CPU
1GB RAM (256MB x 4 modules from extra inventory to start)
Nvidia GeForce 6600 or 6600GT PCI-E, not determined yet
Pair of SATA NCQ hard drives in hardware RAID-1 configuration on-board controller (probably Seagate or WD with 5-yr warranty).
Use existing keyboard, mouse, monitor, CD-RW drives, power supply and tower case initially. I don't think I will overclock, but from what I have read it should be quite possible. Any comments to add on this setup?

It's been 5+ years since my last Dream Machine buildup, which has been used regularly until January before my recent move:
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
ABIT BP-6 motherboard
dual Celeron 366MHz CPUs overclocked to 550MHz
512MB RAM
100GB WD hard drive (upgraded to this about a year ago).
