Sorry for the delay in responding; I was out of town. I can't post the WSJ Interactive article, as that is a service requiring an access fee.

You know way more about the workings of ASR than I do, so I can't respond to most of your questions. But the answer to your question of "what would be a WIN for the speech industry" is, I think, incorporation of ASR into an OS. This will take it from a niche market to a full-time interface.

Otherwise, I agree with what you say, the parts that I understand! I think late 98, with 500 mhz processors, Windows 98, and cheap 64 meg RAM and 6 gig drives will be the time this sector takes off.
