The most important reason I am against energy tax increases is that I think increasing energy taxes would increase the total tax burden. I would probably still not be a big fan of such taxes if other taxes where reduced to make the total tax burden the same, but I might accept this rebalancing of the tax burden if it doesn't get bigger as a whole. However $11.70 per gallon for gasoline (assuming the underlying pre-tax price doesn't change) would be an increase in the gas tax of about $8.70 per gallon, which is too much. It focuses far to much of the tax burden on one area. It would discourage use to the point where the tax revenue would fall, putting pressure to move income or payroll taxes back up and it would provide a huge shock to the economy.
