What if Iran invades Iraq? What if Syria invades Iraq? I think we could see off that invasion easier than we can deal with the insurgency in Iraq. The death toll will increase but we could crush an invasion of Iraq a lot easier than we fought of the Chinese in Korea and more decisively than we can deal with an insurgency. Also the Iraqi army would help fight off the invasion as well. It might even help unify the country. A greater danger is that Iran steps up support to the insurgency. Americans wouldn't die at the same rate as they would fighting off an invasion but it would be harder to stop the more subtly and hidden assistance so it could moderately increase the death toll for a long time. I think the chances for an outright invasion of Iraq by either Syria or Iran while over a hundred thousand members of the US military are in country is close to nil. Neither country greatly desires to have their military smashed. Who knows? I expect the worst. You've expected the best, and still seem to be there. So far I'm right... You expected the worst? Maybe the worst that is reasonably possible but not anything like "Iraq is another Vietnam", or if you did expect that you where far from right.
