Centrists have a point, being strong on defense is mandatory for being elected president. Remember, Bush's entire 2004 smear job on Kerry was centered around the myth that democrats are "weak on defense". Sounds idiotic considering Kerry's military expertise, but that's the GOP's primary weapon against any democrat. Too liberal/weak on defense. So you have to be prepared to counter it.

A red-state senator like Bayh, for instance, understands that his constituents are real flag-wavers. And he wants those swing-voters to vote democrat this time.

There is room in the Dem party for both strong centrists and strong progressives (or many inbetween) as well as some conservatives too. We don't want to be fighting amongst each other now. It's the rightwing which is the enemy, not one wing of the Dem party or the other.
