An observation.

I'm staying with an old friend while recuperating from surgery following a scooter accident. (Collarbone broken into five pieces. Ouch.) We decided to take advantage of my presence here by scheduling an appointment to have his Comcast cable box upgraded to a DVR with HD. Sadly, in this area at least, Comcast doesn't offer a real TiVo as an option.

The box was installed this morning, and I've been working with it to get his favorite shows recorded, etc.

Well this thing just sucks in comparison to my DirecTiVo system. I don't know where they got this software, but the interface is clunky and difficult. Things that take one or two clicks on the TiVo system require going through a labyrinth of menus. I also haven't figured out how to go back one page in the menu system. Now, it may be possible to do that, but on the TiVo, I never had to look at the manual to figure out how to do it.

I understand that the cable operators don't want to share their revenue stream with TiVo, but it's a shame that they can't see the disservice they are doing to their customers. When we ordered the DVR upgrade, we asked if it was a real TiVo, and we were told "It's just like TiVo." Well, it isn't.
