French is a state of mind as much as language. While it isn't hard for an English-speaker to learn grammatically, you have to shift gears mentally to begin to speak it in a true French fashion. I can barely scratch the surface of that. It's like John Philip Sousa compared to Ravel. English is a very rat-tat-tat language most of the time. French isn't.
