The harsh reality is, most people do not have Tivo, and when they get a Comcast or Dish DVR, they think it's just like a Tivo.

Agreed. If TiVo is a grade A recording device and the also ran DVRs are grade B, then traditional VCRs are grade F. If most people are used to F-functionality, the incremental improvement between B and A is just gonna get lost in the noise.
