I was wondering what everybody was talking about -- it's the letter from Ahmadinejad -- why not discuss the substance?

I thought he raised some excellent points, but others I dispute.

For example, the point about the US supporting Iraq against Iran in their terrible war against each other.

He forgets we sold weapons to both sides. I don't have a timeline of that terrible war, perhaps someone else does, but my understanding (maybe "impression" is more precise) is that we did so simultaneously.

There's no doubt that we assisted Saddam early on, but stopped once it became known that he was using poison gas against the Kurds, which became a scandal.

There's no doubt we sold weapons to Iran secretly and used that money to support the Contras against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

War is a terrible thing but as a practical matter, it may be better than the alternatives.

Not sure how we could justify helping both sides in the Iran-Iraq war, though.
