Once when I was in New York I saw a visiting oil sheik outside the Sheraton Grande with four wives. They all were dressed to kill and sure looked happy to me. I don't think the jewels they were wearing or the Mercedes limos they were climbing into made them think they were being degraded! :)

I don't think you should apply American culture to other cultures. It is that propensity amongst many Americans that causes the "Ugly American" syndrome.
