But the CAFE standards, mandating lower average mileage per gallon, were set by the government.

Big business is just as capable of government of acting fat, dumb and happy, as the current sad state of American car companies attests....

Government can give a necessary push in the right direction, through regulation and tax law. The danger of course is that they too will do something stupid.
