If we were oil independent, we would have pretty much ignored the Middle East; other than oil it's a freaking desert, who cares? And if we were oil independent, who knows how steadfast our support of Israel would have been. Right now Israel is strategic; take away oil and it's just another special interest. You've gotta be kidding. US support for Israel is in no way strategic, it's entirely ideaological. If the US stopped supporting Israel there would be little reason for the oil-rich countries to dislike us - we're their biggest customer. Support for Israel makes US oil procurement from the ME more difficult, not less.
