Ideological? Give me a break. It's strategic.

Oil producing nations will sell their oil to whatever entities pay for it. We don't need a nuclear power friend in Arabia to get the Arabians to sell the only valuable thing they produce. Their authoritarian leaders will do that without any push from Americans.

Support for Israel comes from idealogy of supporting democracy, supporting capitalism, and what has been presented to the American public as supporting a people (the Israelis) who are allegedly very much like Americans. And Israelis are very much like Americans in many ways other than their reluctance to grant citizenship to non-Jewish people (all men are not created equal in Israel) and the fact that their borders are not defined or accepted by their neighbors.
