At the foundation of human principle we are tasked with a regard for the well being of our own person and the well being of other creatures. This is also thought of as a regard for the common good. Such a regard requires more than simply codes of conduct, it requires consideration of how such codes may or may not be applicable to the challenges of changing circumstance. This consideration is not possible without the employment of conscience.

Freedom of conscience maintains the delicate balance between responsibility for the care of one's fellows and the freedom from oppression by one's fellows that we should all seek individually and on behalf of one another.

Such freedom is an inalienable endowment, so it can neither be denied nor removed. It can, however, be sacrificed by the individual who chooses loyalty to some lesser purpose as a standard.
