Elmat,
This is a big danger for you folks. I think that you may be right in that there is some Eurozone geopolitcs being played here. But there is another factor, maybe the more important element.

Very large numbers of individual Europeans, and many here in the USA too are very committed socialists. These in the US don't tend to use that label but no other label would fit. A fair number of our aging baby boomers have been hard left political activists their whole adult lives, since their college days in the 1960's. They have invested their whole life in this stuff and many of them are outstanding failures in life because of it. You bet they favor Castro and Chavez.

What really knocked the wind out of their sails was the collapse of the old Soviet world and they really haven't come to terms with that till yet. What they really wanted was for the Soviets to make slight reforms in their system and for Europe and the USA to comform to this new Soviet model. Instead the Soviet system collapsed.

I have two cousins of this type and if they weren't so lazy they might be down there with the "Shining Path" or at least smuggling money and aid to them.

What do you think keeps Castro afloat? He doesn't have any oil. There is a vast amount of what amounts to charity from Europe and elsewhere from left leaning individuals who want to see the Castro regime survive. THere is smuggling into Cuba from US leftwingers too, I know this for a fact.

In 2002 a guy I know very well flew out of Miami with another guy in a Cessna and landed in CUBA! Now the guy I know worked for Carter as an aide for four years and he has devoted his whole life to left wing causes. What they were doing was illegally bringing a big shipment of pharmacueticals into Cuba, and maybe money also, to help the Castro government.

The story was that they "got lost" and strayed into Cuba. They were bound for Honduras and claimed to "have lost their way". A picture of them and the plane on the Cuban airstrip was shown in the hometown Georgia newspaper. They left Cuba and flew on to Honduras and the US officials really worked them over when they returned but as far as I know nothing happened to them. Could be that their Carter Center cohorts provided some cover.

Remember, the left believes in "Inernationalism" which to them means meddeling in the internal politics everywhere and stirring up local leftist and radical labor movements to act in a concerted manner with leftists in the developed nations.

I got news for 'em though, it ain't gonna work. <grin>
