Ted, Nonsense.......you just said up above the rich will still be rich after they pay higher taxes. We are talking roughly the top ten to twenty percent of the population.....and those few people who are migrating up should be able to afford the higher taxes, and if they can't, they will have to remain upper middle class. Trust me, there are worse fates.

If the rich can dodge the taxes, what's the solution? Make the tax code even more lopsided to compensate? Or come up with a system that fewer rich people can take advantage of?

First of all, you keep using the term "dodge". Its a felony to cheat on your income tax or to "dodge" those taxes. However, there are legitimate deductions that one can take. Some accountants are more aggressive than others; even as that is true, it is very difficult to make it so that someone who earns over a million dollars annually doesn't pay income taxes. And if an accountant does try to pull it off, its very likely that that return will get audited. The best an accountant can do is minimize the impact of taxes.

However, that's not what we are talking about......the Bushies have been giving tax breaks left and right.......the latest extension was signed off just this week. Why? Back in 2002, they claimed that tax cuts were needed to stimulate the economy because we were in recession. Many economists don't buy into that theory, but since the GOP controls Congress, they got their way. Now however, we are no longer in recession......in fact, the feds are worried about inflation and are raising interest rates. So why extend the tax cuts?.

Some time back someone posted on this thread that a democracy is doomed when raids on its treasury become commonplace. Well, it sure looks like that's what's happening now.

One thing is for sure, raising the tax rates by itself isn't going to solve the problem. Those who quote Buffet just to bash Bush are just taking ideas out-of-context.

Ten, you have got to stop thinking that people are bashing Bush for the hell of it, or because they are partisan. That may have been true in 2000 but now its very clear people are worried. He is truly a terrible president......not only because he doesn't know how to govern but because he brought in a whole load of crooks with him. Someone like Buffet who is from the Midwest calls them like he sees them. People like yourself who have only lived on the east or west coasts can not begin to understand the mindset of a midwestern. Midwesterners are very close to the land and have never had it easy so they are much more pragmatic and sincere than those of us who live on either coast.

When Buffet says something, I would listen very carefully. He is not blowing smoke. He is worried as are a lot of important people who are not partisan. The fact that I post on this thread is an indication of my level of concern. I never paid much attention to politics before 2000. I voted and that's about it. I started watching what was happening politically only after the 2000 election freaked me out. I just don't think passing things off on partisanship cuts it anymore. There are some real problems brought on by this administration, and if they don't get addressed, I believe this country will be in deeper trouble than it is right now.
