Seems to me it depends on whether or not that is a publicity stunt. Revised history is a kind of science fiction--what-if history or what-if future or what-if alien location or what-if alternate universe. I particularly like such story lines. If that's what it is, then it might be controversial, since what-ifs are intended to provoke speculation and reflection, but it shouldn't be offensive. Of course, the political identity types would make it out to be offensive, but I don't think it necessarily is.
