Kerry responded to the smearvet attacks the first day. He claimed they had nothing to do with the truth, then he assigned very credible Max Cleland and his old boatmates to defend him while he stuck to the issues. They defended Kerry ably, but the sheer wave of rightwing focus behind the smearvets and the phony "weak on defense" ads was relentless and Bush had many allies in the media willing to sell out to the liars. As a result they created the impression of doubt about Kerry's very real combat heroism. The American People are really to blame. We cannot allow smears like this to gain traction again. It pollutes our democracy.
