Could be, but I'm inclined to think it's the availability of instant food.

I've had my own problems with excess weight. I had an outdoor job, which helped greatly for most of my career, but the minute I moved into an office job the pounds started piling on. I'm walking and trying to cut down on intake now that I'm retired, but I have a way to go.

Part of our national problem is a tacit caste system of beautiful people and other people. Without good guidance, the 'others' do what feels good, and that is often eating. If you go to a buffet restaurant, you can see very large people loading up because that is the only pleasure they get out of life.

Making kids walk to school would help. Taking away their soft drink machines would help, and making sure they get one good meal at the cafeteria every day would help too.
